This Breakfast Boosts Vitality & Reduces Cravings, Says Doctor 2023

The majority of people tailor their daily food to their favorite flavors and, frequently, their health goals. Some prioritize muscle-building diets, while others prioritize skin-loving foods, while yet others prioritize balanced meals.

There is no downside to consuming dopamine-rich foods, regardless of where you lie on the spectrum. On a recent edition of the mindbodygreen podcast, integrative medicine doctor Amy Shah, M.D., author of I’m So Effing Hungry, discusses how to do this and why it helps to reduce cravings and increase energy; the following is a brief summary.

What foods contain dopamine?

What are dopamine-containing foods? Protein-rich foods include yogurt, eggs, almonds, and seeds, among others. “Naturally high-protein diets are dopamine-rich foods because they include an amino acid called tyrosine, which the brain turns into dopamine,” adds Shah.

The connection between dopamine and appetite.

According to Shah, dopamine fuels cravings as opposed to replenishing the body. But, you may “hack” your desires by giving yourself a large dose of dopamine through protein-rich meals, particularly in the morning.

“In the morning, you want to break your fast with dopamine-rich meals because you want that motivation, you want that drive, you want that energy,” says Shah. Dopamine is closely connected to norepinephrine1, which provides the morning adrenaline rush. As a result, you are less likely to indulge in compulsive snacking throughout the day if you consume a protein-rich breakfast in the morning.
