Endometriosis Awareness Month: Know its symptoms 2023
Endometriosis is a disorder in which endometrial tissue, which is the uterine lining, migrates to places outside the uterus.
According to the World Health Organization, this condition produces persistent inflammatory responses that may result in the creation of scars (adhesions, fibrosis) in the pelvis and elsewhere in the body (WHO).
This condition affects over 190 million women and adolescents of reproductive age worldwide. Endometriosis must be diagnosed early since it is sometimes confused with menstruation symptoms.
Endometriosis affects the majority of women from the commencement of their first period to menopause, regardless of ethnicity or socioeconomic background, because it is a complicated illness.
Manifestations of endometriosis
Due to extreme pain, exhaustion, sadness, anxiety, and infertility, endometriosis can diminish the quality of life. In addition to painful periods, persistent pelvic discomfort, pain before or after sexual activity, difficult bowel motions, painful urination, stomach bloating, and nausea are other symptoms of the condition.
Therapy for endometriosis
There is currently no proven method for avoiding endometriosis. Yet, knowledge, early diagnosis, and treatment can reduce or stop the disease’s course. It can also lower the burden of its symptoms over time.
Common treatments include contraceptive steroids, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, and analgesics.
Surgical removal of endometriosis lesions, adhesions, and scar tissue is possible. Yet, the efficacy of surgery in lowering discomfort and boosting pregnancy rates is frequently contingent on the severity of the condition.
